ATHOL — Two new exhibitions at the Athol Public Library are military items loaned from the Athol Historical Society and rock and mineral specimens loaned from the Athol Birds and Nature Club.

Historical exhibits include drums from the Civil War, a canteen with an embroidered velvet cover during the Civil War, a gunpowder box from the Independence War, a metal helmet from the First World War, a Purple Heart from the Spanish-American War, and the Congressional Medal of Honor awarded to Egypt in 1876. Elmer Snow. The framed Medal of Honor is accompanied by a photo of Elmer Snow and a short biography. Mr. Snow lost his arms in the battle, returned to Asor, became a successful lawyer, and was buried in the Highland Cemetery.

The rock and mineral display is provided by the geology department of the Athol Bird and Nature Club, including specimens found locally-dinosaur footprints in the slate of Gill Highway 2, clay concretions in Montague, and Warwick Grace Schist Radiant tourmaline, and Moscow mica flakes from Athol. Other fossils on display include mammoth teeth, shark teeth, petrified wood and nautilus. Crystals are some of the most beautiful gems in the series, including crystal quartz, desert rose chalcedony, black, radial and green tourmalines, and gorgeous amethyst geodes.

A scavenger hunt featuring pictures of rocks and minerals can win small prizes for participants!

The exhibits will be on display until November 19. The library is located at 568 Main Street.
