Nevertheless, "Life" is the final thesis exhibition of eight 2020 graduates from the Leroy Hofberg School of Painting at the Maryland College of Art. Every year, MICA second-year MFA students hold an exhibition at the campus gallery in Baltimore to showcase their essay work. This spring, the 2020 MFA graduating class presented their paper exhibition at Art Cake in Brooklyn, New York.

The eight artists in the graduating class will exhibit paintings representing their second-year thesis works, as well as works created between the spring of 2020 and the spring of 2021. Although each artist represents a unique form and method of painting, the name of the exhibition, the still life, imply the moment of waiting and change, and the challenge of capturing it. Among the eight different works, the materiality of painting and how its practitioners relate to it enable the artist to ask questions that are quite different from those raised by other artists in other media. These eight painters ranged from Wenzhou, China to Salt Lake City, Utah, and their works spanned collage, automation, portrait painting, and other disciplines of all sizes.

The LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting and its alumni are at the forefront of contemporary art and painting discussions. This not only affects the well-being of future painters, but also affects how we, as a society, perceive cultural theory and art in practice.
